Two drinks in
Aug. 29th, 2019 08:52 pmI see a lot of people on Tumblr who assume as a matter of course that real fans hate the later MCU movies - the movies that real fans like, of course, are whichever movies support their particular interpretation of Loki's character.
They think their dislike of the later movies means that they were done poorly and that no one who is really a fan of the MCU could like them.
(Some of them are also convinced that Ragnorok was the worst Thor movie, which, ?????? And like it's one thing if you just don't like it, it's another to pretend it's an affront and that it totally trashed the characters. Personally, I think it has some of the better character-building moments in the Thor movies, but because it's a bit more subtle than a dramatic woobie death scene MAYBE THEY DON'T GET IT.)
And I'm sitting here like ... yeah, I think that they could have made some better choices. But at the same time, I'm pretty sure they were fucked no matter what they did. If you have a popular series that goes on long enough AND has enough time between installments that fandom comes up with its own interpretations and predictions, then you're going to have a lot of fans that are mad at you, no matter what.
They still really fucked up with Steve though.

They don't seem to realize that the movies weren't made for their tiny corner of the fandom! I liked Thor: Ragnorok - it was my favorite, and just because it didn't give me the emotional beats I'd expect from reading a bunch of Loki fanfiction doesn't mean they fucked it up. A story can be incoherent or characterization can be bad, but not just because it isn't what you wanted it to be.
Of course these are often the same people who will insist that their interpretation is the only right one, so that argument won't go too far.
... oh hey I think I just expanded my blog post at you. Sorry XD
