Day 01 - Your Least Favorite Song

Generally, if I don't like a song, I endeavor not to hear it again--and wallah!* Like magic, I forget all about it. It saves me a lot of rage.

However, there's a song that I hate not so much because of how it sounds, but because it's very existence and popularity offends me. Not listening to it doesn't make that go away. It's still out there, being wrong.

I'm talking, of course, about Katy Perry's fucking stupid cover of "I Kissed a Girl," which took a cute song about kissing a girl and turned it into a piece of fuax bisexual play-lesbian-for-the-male-gaze piece of voyeuristic porn-culture bullshit.

I'm not even going to link to a video on youtube; I'd be too tempted to be one of those youtube comments haters, all "WARGHLBBBBLE katy perry succccckkks sesame street's too good for her."

* I found out recently that some people spell it like this. That's awesome.

To be fair, Katy Perry's "I Kissed A Girl" is not a cover of Jill Sobule's "I Kissed A Girl". It's just a shitty sexist homophobic pile of crap with the same title.

To be honest, it's been forever since I heard the Jill Sobule song - probably back when it was first popular. And I paid very little attention to the words in the Katy Perry video the one time I saw it, because I was so angry at the images.

My anger is dulled... an eensy bit. BUT IT'S STILL VERY SHARP.

Nope, it's not. I've got both versions on my MP3 player -- the Jill Sobule copy I've had forever; I honestly have no idea why I have the Katy Perry version and why I haven't deleted it from my collection -- and they're different.

I'm not convinced that she didn't steal the title. It's such a punchy, matter-of-fact statement that it doesn't seem like a typical pop song title that she would come up with on her own. And the original song isn't that obscure.

But that'd be something hard to prove either way, unless she's said somewhere that's where she got it.

Yeah, the Sobule song is cutesy and romantic and sweet, and Katy Perry's is...yeah.

I was just explaining to someone why I hate Katy Perry and her stupid song last weekend. Unfortunately, I made the mistake of having this conversation with someone from my gaming group, so it didn't go anywhere. I think a couple of those guys just tune me out when I start "going off" on "feminist rants". Also, apparently Katy Perry is hot and that makes everything she does okay. D:
