Today's Garfield minus Garfield :

Now that I think about it, Jon Arbuckle probably is the type to floss, and to color-sort his socks, and to carefully measure the 1/3 cup of boiling water he's about to add to his instant oatmeal.
Since he has no family or friends to fill up his time--only a cat and a dog who, even when he imagines them talking to him, seem to hold him in no regard--I can easily imagine him filling the time with the minutiae of life.
(I'm writing this as I consider how to best organize my spice cabinet.)
Last night I made a fairly easy, but probably not that healthy meal:
1 cup Israeli couscous or pearl couscous
1 roasted red pepper, chopped*
2 roma tomatoes, chopped
About 1/3 lb hot Italian sausage
3 garlic cloves, minced
1/2 onion, chopped
1/4 cup grated cheese like parmesan, asiago -- something sharp and salty
Prepare the couscous according to package directions. Don't overcook.
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium-high heat. Add the onion and garlic and saute until it starts to turn golden. Add the sausage and continue to saute, breaking large clumps over small clumps. When the sausage is almost done, add roasted red pepper and tomato; you really just need to heat them through.
Add your couscous and continue to stir so it doesn't stick.
Add your cheese and continue to stir to spread it around. Then you are done.
Depending on the quality and amount of cheese you use, you might want to add some salt. I also added a little hot pepper flakes at the end because I wanted my sinuses cleared out. Without the hot pepper flakes, it will only be mildly spicy.
It looks like a lot of food at the end, but I was hungry so I ended up eating it all last night. No leftovers for me today. I would say it's probably good for two people if they've had lunch. :(
* I don't like to use the kind that come in jars except for in salads. Roasting a pepper is really easy under the broiler, although I've yet to figure out how to do it without setting off the smoke detector.
