I have lost my origins
Jan. 30th, 2010 03:29 pmI feel like the only one in the world who thought that this was funny as well as heartbreaking. For those who haven't seen it yet, it's a comic commemorating the Spirit rover on Mars, which was declared a "stationary research station" a few days ago.
The reason it's funny because of how the artist doesn't even try to disguise that he's reaching for our heartstrings and giving them a hard tug. I actually interpreted it as comment on the trope.
The Spirit rover, after all, isn't sentient, and doesn't want to return home. The audience knows this, but in order for the strip to work, has to forget it for a moment.
Anyway, the reason for this post is that
linaerys wrote a cute little fix-it story: Spirit, a Sequel.
(But maybe the comic affected me more deeply than I thought: Last night I had a dream that I had no home and no connections and passed through the world covered in a solitude so tangible that it actually formed a film that obscured my vision. But I had a little black and white kitten that I carried in my pocket.)
