So, Discord. And other things.

Every year, I get nostalgic for the days of fandom past - when I had an active reading page full of people that I knew, when I regularly talked to friends on chat, and so on.

Over the years most of my online friends have drifted away, even really good ones. Some of that is my fault. I have two that I still talk to regularly - we switched to Discord, but just hang out in private.

I miss specific people. But I also want to make new friends? The problem is, I'm not really a fandom content creator. I never have been. Whatever creative energies I have - which isn't much these days, after working on the dissertation - generally end up being shifted into original characters and worldbuilding for stories I just haven't got the energy to write.

I'm also not like, super into any one fandom. So there's really no reason for people to find me, follow me, talk to me ... I'm orbiting around fandom and kind of feeling like an outsider all the time.

So how do you meet people? I'm trying to be more active here, but I think I'm missing real-time communication - you know, chat and IM. I know a lot of people hang out on Discord these days. Any good servers that you would recommend?

(Also, people who make friends on Tumblr are like, alchemists or something.)

I've been active on the Yuletide chat/Discord for a while--it's not always super active, but there's a group of fannish regulars on there and of course activity picks up this time of year. There are instructions on the community, I think?

I have no idea. I am on a few subreddits, but honestly, they're not really... communal. I've never felt a lot of desire to get to know anyone outside of them. Maybe one person, actually. If I found out she had LJ or DW, I'd probably add her to my flist. But that's it.

I could see how one makes friends on Tumblr if it's a small fandom, or any fandom, but I'm currently not in any fandom I find it hard.
Maybe I should try Discord... I enjoyed chatting online but I haven't done it for many years now.

It me. I hardly ever log into DW - most of the time it's once a month to update my GWYO word count - so then I end up going 'it's so quiet, who will be friends with me' even though I know I'm part of the problem. (Also, sometimes I feel guilty because I've been out of the loop and I don't know what's happened to the people on my list. And then I don't comment! The cycle continues!)

I recently (like last month or so ago) joined two Discord channels: Cranky Old Fangirls and alt.discord.fandom.oldschool(?). The 2nd one seems to be attracting more members and some of them are seriously old school in the sense of I'm blinking at some of the pseuds showing up. Let me know if you want an invite for either.
