RIP Lady Dog

My mom called me tonight to tell me that they had to put their black lab, Lady, down. She wasn't even eight years old yet.
They weren't expecting this. She seemed perfectly healthy until this week. Then they noticed that she had lumps under her skin that grew noticeably by the next day. The vet confirmed that it was cancer, and that there was nothing that they could do except prolong it for a few days; they decided not to.
Lady was my stepdad's dog more than anything. The Humane Society told us that she was unadoptable because she was just too hyper, but he had had a black lab before and fell in love with her. He wanted that one, and no other one would do.
She was a pain in the ass at first, but over the years she settled down. She still got excited when just about anything happened, but she would try so hard to sit still like we taught her. It was so sweet.
She was also very smart.
One cool thing about Lady:
Our other dog, Ginger, is very old. She's probably deaf and certainly senile. She doesn't come when she's called anymore. My mom always let her and Lady outside together to do their business, but Ginger either couldn't hear or couldn't understand her when she called her back inside. So Mom would look at Lady and say, "Go get Ginger," and Lady would go get Ginger, and Ginger would follow her inside.
My stepdad's really broken up about it. I wish I had been there to say goodbye, but at least my mom and stepdad were able to take her to the vet together.
